Cardiac Arrest 101: Helping Someone Who is Experiencing a Cardiac Arrest

Cardiac arrest refers to an abrupt cessation of the function of one’s heart. This happens when a person’s heart stops pumping blood causing the victim to stop breathing and lose consciousness. This health issue (cardiac arrest) is prevalent in the United States - 357,000 Americans are affected and about 70 percent to 90 percent of people die before even getting to the hospital. Because of this, it is very important for you to learn the basics when it comes to responding to cardiac arrest. In this way, you can help save a victim’s life.

The following is a list of things you need to remember when you help someone experiencing a cardiac arrest:

  • Remain calm.

This is the first and foremost step you need to remember. Keep calm at all times because when you remain calm you are able to think clearly and correctly.

  • Call for backup.

It is always better to call the experts. This is why you need to tell someone to call for the emergency response team or simply call 911.

  • Check the victim’s condition.

While waiting for the emergency response team, kindly check on the victim and see if they are conscious or unconscious. If the victim is not breathing or is barely breathing, administer CPR.
