If you ask any expert in skilled nursing in Colorado, one of the most challenging aspects of taking care of a patient with Alzheimer’s Disease is sleep.

Sundowner’s Syndrome is a behavioral phenomenon that is shared by all patients with AD. This occurs when the patient is suddenly confused by the lack of light outside at dusk and becomes agitated, aggressive, or combative. These behaviors, although understandable, can become a great source of stress for both the family and the caregiver.

If you’re rendering home health care in Aurora, Colorado, you must find ways with which to minimize the occurrence of Sundowner’s Syndrome. In a nutshell, however, the key is to manage and regulate their sleeping patterns.

Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Limit patient’s consumption of stimulants like alcohol, caffeine, and nicotine.
  • Avoid letting the patient watch TV near bedtime, or when they wake up in the middle of the night.
  • Discourage late afternoon naps, or limit naps to less than two hours.
  • Take them out for a walk and get some sunshine, which can help regulate sleeping patterns.
  • Expand excess energy through regular, but not strenuous, exercises.

Bear in mind that behavioral patterns of Alzheimer’s Disease are things that are beyond the patient’s control. Compassion and patience should always be observed.
