Suppressing Sundowning Signs among Dementia Patients

As a home care company dedicated to raising awareness about dementia, we want to shed light on some of the symptoms that seniors with dementia go through.

Sundowning is a group of symptoms, including agitation, restlessness, irritability, and confusion, that can occur in someone with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia as daylight begins to fade.

Its exact cause is still unknown. However, experts believe that persons with dementia may have altered sleep-wake cycles due to abnormalities in their brain chemistry caused by the condition. Unmet demands such as hunger or thirst, pain, and boredom are all possible reasons too.

To help a person suffering from sundowning, our San Diego Alzheimer’s care team suggests the following tips:

  • Reduce the number of distractions such as noise, clutter, and the number of people present.
  • Distract the patient’s attention with their favorite snack, item, or pastime.
  • At sunset, draw the curtains, close the blinds, and turn on the lights to reduce the shadows formed.
  • Quiet time should be reserved for the early hours of the evening. Play relaxing music, read a book or take a stroll to relax.

If you or someone you know needs help in handling sundowning symptoms, you may benefit from the services of our home health care in California.
